Perio PODS Receives FDA Clearance: A New At-Home Approach to Periodontal Wound Care

What happens to periodontal tissues after the patient leaves the dental chair? A new device is designed to focus on that critical healing period.

Emanate Biomedical has announced FDA 510(k) clearance for Perio PODS, a clinician-directed, at-home periodontal wound dressing designed for use following planned non-surgical periodontal procedures, including scaling and root planing and periodontal maintenance.

The company describes Perio PODS as a patient-matched dental tray preloaded with an engineered hydrogel that forms a temporary physical barrier over treated periodontal tissues.

How does Perio PODS work?

Each Perio PODS device is custom manufactured using a digital impression captured by the dental practice.

According to Emanate, patients are prescribed the device for:

  • 30 minutes twice daily
  • Up to 15 days
  • Following a planned non-surgical periodontal procedure

The hydrogel is a water-based polymer matrix containing chlorhexidine digluconate as a preservative, and is specifically formulated for use within the Perio PODS system.

Why is this interesting for periodontists?

Scaling and root planing and other non-surgical periodontal procedures are routinely used in the management of periodontitis. However, treatment creates an acute tissue-healing phase that continues after the patient leaves the clinic.

Perio PODS is designed around this specific period by providing a temporary barrier intended to protect injured periodontal tissue from further irritation.

The concept could be particularly relevant to clinicians looking at ways to extend professionally directed periodontal care into the patient’s home environment.

What does the clinical evidence show?

Emanate reports a 45-patient randomized controlled trial conducted at the ADA Forsyth Institute.

Under the study-specific treatment regimen, Perio PODS was associated with greater reductions in periodontal pocket depth and several markers of gingival inflammation compared with periodontal debridement alone.

The results were selected for oral presentation at the 2026 IADR General Session.

Importantly, the company also states that a larger multicenter randomized controlled trial is currently underway. Therefore, additional clinical evidence will be important in determining the broader role of the technology in periodontal treatment.

What’s next?

Emanate says it is preparing manufacturing and commercial infrastructure for a phased U.S. launch in 2027. The company has also established a Launch Partner Program involving periodontal and general dental practices.

For dentists, Perio PODS represents an interesting development in the growing field of clinician-directed at-home oral care, where personalized devices are being designed to support treatment beyond the dental chair.
