if a toothbrush could tell your patient which areas they missed, warn them when they are brushing too hard, and guide them toward better coverage—in real time?
That is the direction Philips Sonicare is taking with its Next-Generation DiamondClean 9900 Prestige, an electric toothbrush that combines on-device artificial intelligence, real-time brushing guidance, smart pressure sensing and a Mouth Map.
The technology is particularly interesting from a dental-professional perspective because it attempts to address one of the biggest challenges in preventive dentistry: what happens between dental appointments.
From Brushing Instructions to Real-Time Feedback
Traditional electric toothbrushes can provide timers, pressure alerts and different brushing modes. The new DiamondClean 9900 Prestige takes this further by using Philips’ third-generation AI model and spatially aware guidance to track brushing coverage.
According to Philips, the toothbrush can provide immediate feedback on where the patient is brushing, which areas still need attention and whether excessive pressure is being applied,
The central feature is the 12-segment Mouth Map.
Instead of simply completing a two-minute brushing cycle and assuming the mouth has been adequately cleaned, the system attempts to show whether particular sections have received sufficient attention.
What does the Mouth Map do?
The system is designed to:
- Track brushing coverage
- Identify areas that may have been missed
- Direct the user back to areas requiring additional attention
- Provide feedback through the toothbrush itself
- Show the patient’s coverage after brushing
Philips’ professional dental page says the Mouth Map can identify a segment that was missed or not brushed for long enough and direct the user to revisit that area.
That could be particularly relevant for patients who consistently miss the same areas of the mouth.
What Technology Is Inside?
The Next-Generation DiamondClean 9900 Prestige combines several technologies rather than relying on AI alone.
1. On-device AI
Philips describes this as its first electric toothbrush using on-device AI for real-time spatially aware brushing guidance.
2. Mouth Map
The 12-segment Mouth Map provides feedback about brushing coverage and areas requiring additional attention.

3. Smart pressure sensing
The toothbrush monitors pressure and provides feedback when the user applies too much or too little force.
4. SenseIQ Adaptive Intensity
Philips says SenseIQ can automatically adjust brushing intensity according to the user’s brushing behaviour. The company’s product information states that pressure, motion and coverage can be sensed up to 100 times per second when the relevant pressure and SenseIQ functions are activated.
5. Sonic cleaning technology
The device uses Philips Sonicare’s next-generation sonic technology, with the company reporting 62,000 bristle movements per minute.
Philips’ Plaque and Gum Claims
Philips reports that the Next-Generation DiamondClean 9900 Prestige can deliver up to 20× more plaque removal and up to 15× healthier gums compared with a manual toothbrush. These are manufacturer claims with specific test conditions and should not be interpreted as a universal clinical outcome for every patient.
This distinction is important.
The more interesting clinical question may actually be whether real-time feedback improves brushing behaviour over the long term, rather than simply whether the powered brush removes more plaque than a manual brush under controlled conditions.
What Could This Mean for the Dental Practice?
For dentists and hygienists, AI-enabled home-care technology could create new opportunities for patient education.
The biggest potential advantage is the continuity between the dental chair and the patient’s bathroom.
The clinician provides the professional assessment and personalised instructions.
The technology provides feedback during everyday brushing.
The next appointment provides an opportunity to review whether the patient’s habits have improved.
