Is Your Daily Mouthwash Helping or Hurting Your Teeth During Whitening?

If you’re using an at-home teeth whitening kit, chances are you’re also using a mouthwash as part of your daily oral hygiene routine. But have you ever wondered whether your mouth rinse could affect the whitening results—or even your tooth enamel?

A new study published in Odontology (2026) investigated exactly that. Researchers evaluated whether commercially available mouth rinses with different active ingredients influence enamel properties during at-home bleaching treatment. Their findings offer valuable insights for both dental professionals and patients undergoing whitening procedures.

Why This Study Matters

At-home bleaching has become one of the most popular cosmetic dental treatments because it is convenient, affordable, and effective. However, bleaching agents such as hydrogen peroxide can temporarily alter enamel by reducing its hardness and changing its surface characteristics.

Since many people continue using mouthwash throughout the whitening process, researchers wanted to determine whether different mouth rinse formulations could further influence enamel health or interfere with whitening effectiveness.
